Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (3PD) Study Update
Debbie Cane and Dr Andrew Jones
Did you know that:
- You use your eyes (as well as your balance organs and joint information) to balance?
- The brain’s processing of this information is a fundamental process to allow us to differentiate whether we and our environment are still, or moving?
- The information from the eyes, the balance organs and joints need to be processed and combined in exactly the right way to help this processing so we do not feel dizzy and remain upright when we need to?
I am sure most of you already know much of this…
However, if you have 3PD (also called PPPD), you may not know or understand the cause for your symptoms.
The STARDUST (STudy to Address and Reduce Dizziness in 3PD Using Sensory Theory) team at The University of Manchester are investigating whether the brain’s processing of visual information and combining of this information is working properly.
You may have 3PD and really be struggling with symptoms. If so, please know that there is already so much that can be done to help you to manage your symptoms. This can usually be accessed by asking your GP to refer you for specialist help through ENT/audiology. You may also consider reaching out to others for support. You can also read the patient case study: 'live well with dizziness'.
Getting to the bottom of exactly WHY symptoms are being caused, may help you, and your clinicians even better manage your symptoms. This is what the STARDUST project is doing…

Thank you!
Thanks to those of you with 3PD who have already offered to be participants in our study which started eight months ago. We are very grateful for your time and are pleased to update you that the study is going well. Some pictures of the team participating in testing are below
We need you!
We would like to invite others with 3PD to consider contributing to our research. This involves two half-day visits to Manchester (which can be split or sequential). Travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed. More information on how to become a participant and what to expect can be found here.
We hope to see some of you in Manchester!
