Acute Vertigo in the Emergency Department: Challenges and Successes

Diego Kaski, Consultant Neurologist at NHNN and Honorary Associate Professor at UCL, London

Acute vertigo diagnosis and management remains a major challenge in the emergency setting. This is because of a lack of clear algorithms or pathways for non-specialists, and the diverse range of possible pathologies that can present with dizziness and vertigo. Most worryingly, getting the diagnosis right matters hugely, both to ensure expedient management of life threatening disorders such as stroke or brain tumours, but also to prevent the development of chronic symptoms.

Thanks to generous funding from the Ménière’s Society, we embarked on a three-year study exploring the barriers and facilitators to making a diagnosis, from patient and clinical perspectives, detailed the common causes of acute vertigo, developed clinical guidelines and pathways that have been adopted across the UK, and identified important considerations for improving triage, diagnosis, and treatment to improve patient care. In this talk, I will summarise some of our key findings and highlight future directions.

Tickets are FREE for Ménière's Society Members as part of your membership - Click here to register

Non-Members can purchase tickets for £5 from our online shop.
