Message from the Chair of Trustees

A little over 30 years ago I was at home looking out of the kitchen window and without warning everything started spinning and I fell to the floor and was violently ill for what seemed an eternity. It sounds dramatic now but I honestly thought I was dying. Over the next few months I had several more attacks and suffered tinnitus and some deafness but the vertigo attacks were the worst. Eventually I was diagnosed as having Ménière's disease something that I had never heard of and it was then that I first had contact with the Ménière's Society.

At the time my contact with the Society was a great help. It was comforting to know that I didn't have a terminal illness and that there were a lot of other sufferers who seemed to be adapting to the condition by various methods. How useful and supportive I have found the readers’ letters and other information given by the Society over the years! Against this background it is an honour and a privilege to be elected as Chair of the Trustees. I know I have a hard act to follow as David Renton has done an excellent job as Chair over the past six years, but I will do my best!

It is true to say that in my case at the outset the condition (I prefer this to “disease) I was in a state of despair and wondered whether I would have to give up my career and become permanently disabled. The first year was the worst but slowly matters improved and I have lead a normal happy and fulfilling life. I only mention this to encourage readers who may be in the early stages of the condition to be positive about the future because if my experience is anything to go by life will improve.

One of the important functions of the Society is to provide finance for research and it is very encouraging to hear of the success of one of the projects the Society first supported around seven years ago. The results of which have recently been reported in the Lancet magazine. This has only proved possible through the support and help of our members and volunteers so a very big thank you to all.
